flan, originally uploaded by snuffykin.

When I went to Costa Rica in July, I had the good fortune to meet up with amigurumi-maker Natalia who graciously spent an afternoon showing me around San Jose. We visited craft stores for yarn hunting, bookstores (craft sections, of course), an indoor market and public art (I got a photo with the Fat Lady). Nat was wonderfully kind to come out to meet me. We'd never met in person before --and as we started talking, we just gabbed along nearly non-stop! Hehe. She is a warm, generous, vivacious, thoughtful person. I felt very fortunate indeed after days of sightseeing to see a different side of CR culture on my last full day there.

Flan is one of Natalia's patterns. It's so tasty looking I went out and got some store-bought flan after making it. Not the same as home-made, I'm sure. But when you have a craving, there it is.

I thought it was sort of funny that I didn't have to buy anything to make this pattern -- I already have so much crafty stuff, I had all the ingredients. When does that happen? Hardly ever.

I decided to call it Humble. Yes, it does look fancy with the toppings, but the name seems to fit.

Must go eat flan now.

Natalia blogs as Fidgety Crochet and the pattern is at her online shop here.

Have you seen "Ponyo" yet? :D

I spent the weekend obsessing over making Ponyo and many hours later came up with this.

The hardest part was the waves around the skirt and then I did the mirror image in white to go under the body. Second hardest was getting the odd head shape. Still not happy with it and how I placed the eyes. The eyes look odd, but then she looks odd, a human head on a fishie body? Also not happy with the hair which came out lighter and fluffier. Maybe the eyes are too big for the head. *sigh*

This one will go to my Niece #2 (who I took to see the movie and she liked it x 5!) and I can make the second one for meeeee. With smaller eyes 'n darker hair.

I do like the nose and the smile, and the flippers. The hair I experimented on by combing the yarn, separating the plies. But look, she has a fat belly, like the song.

The pattern: Un lapin amigurumi or Rabbit ? by Christelle Trafarski on her blog A voir etc... The blog is written in French, but the pattern is available in English and in French. There is a nice gallery of pics of bunny persons that others have made. How DO they get that swirl effect on the face? Hmm. I like it.Christelle has a new amigurumi book out now, also in French, Amigurumi & cie - 25 créations originales au crochet.

Jenny the Explorer

Jenny was a character that appeared last season in an episode of you-know-what, "The Doctor's Daughter" and was played by actress Georgia Moffett. Although she was just in that one episode, I imagined that miniDoctor would like her as a companion. ^-^

She should be an action figure, with chopping action arm. Thwack! And bendable joints so she can do backflips. flipflipflipflip
